The new short animated film by the Macedonian author Krste Gospodinovski, “Silent Cinema”, produced by Focus Pocus Films, in co-production with Flip Book Productions and Opal Production, and supported by the Film Agency, will have its premiere in the official selection of this year’s edition of the most prestigious and oldest animated film festival ‘Annecy’ in France. Out of 3900 films submitted from all continents, “Silent Cinema” will compete with another 70 films for one of the most important awards in the world of animation. The success of the team led by Gospodinovski represents a significant step forward for the Macedonian auteur animation, as this is the first Macedonian film since “Adam” by Petar Gligorovski from 1977 to be included in the official selection of the festival.

The film is based on a screenplay by Krste Gospodinovski, Zharko Ivanov and Dimitar Dimoski, which was inspired by the short story of the same name by Dimitar Dimoski, which won an award at the “Nova Makedonija” literary competition. Dimitar Dimoski and Darko Popov are the producers, and Zharko Ivanov (Flip Book Productions) Radu Nicolae and Dorin Stelescu (Opal Production) are the co-producers. Zharko Ivanov is also the Director of Animation together with Goce Gospodinovski. The cinematography is by Goran Naumovski, Dimo Popov, Krste Gospodinovski, the sound designer is Goran Petrovski, and the music composer is Vladimir Lukash. The set design is by Krste Gospodinovski, Viktorija Dineva and Tamara Radojković.

“Silent Cinema” is a story about a small cinema set at the end of the silent era, where a former film star, masking his fading fame, decides to screen only silent films. His son grows up peacefully in this illusory world, unaware of the changes taking place outside its walls, until an unusual discovery shakes his beliefs, disrupting the already fragile relationship with his father.

The film is made in the puppet stop-motion animation technique and what makes it exceptionally specific is the fact that the entire film is made in one continuous shot.

The 64th edition of Annecy will be held from June 8th to 14th in Annecy, France. In addition to Annecy, the film will also be screened at the 53rd edition of the prestigious “Animafest” Zagreb, another one of the most important animated film festivals in the world. “Silent Cinema” will soon be premiered before the Macedonian audience.
